Veterinarians commonly consider romifidine hydrochloride when a patient requires a state of profound sedation that allows for safer handling, transport or minor clinical interventions. It is a frequent point of discussion for procedures such as dental examinations, imaging or the suturing of minor wounds. In many clinical settings, romifidine is selected for its specific profile, which typically allows for the horse to remain standing while maintaining a degree of coordination that differs from other sedatives in its class.

At a pharmacological level, romifidine hydrochloride acts as an agonist at the central alpha-2 adrenergic receptors. By stimulating these receptors, it facilitates a reduction in the release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine in the central nervous system. This mechanism leads to a dose-dependent state of sedation and muscle relaxation. Because it is highly selective for alpha-2 receptors, it is characterized by a specific duration of action and a profile of cardiovascular effects that your veterinarian will account for when designing a protocol. Your veterinarian will determine the most appropriate use of this medication based on your horse's weight, health status and the specific depth of sedation required for the intended procedure.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring.

Commonly observed effects of romifidine hydrochloride administration include visible sedation, a lowered head carriage and a temporary decrease in heart rate (bradycardia). Some horses may also experience transient changes in blood pressure or a decrease in gastrointestinal motility shortly after administration. Because this medication influences the cardiovascular and nervous systems, your veterinarian will monitor for any signs of respiratory depression or abnormal heart rhythms during the sedative period. If you observe persistent stumbling, significant changes in coordination or unusual behavioral reactions after the sedation has worn off, contact your veterinarian promptly.

This medication is typically used with extra caution or avoided in horses with pre-existing cardiovascular disease, respiratory compromise or significant liver or kidney impairment. It is also carefully evaluated in patients experiencing shock or severe dehydration. Before administration, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other prescriptions and supplements your horse is receiving, as romifidine can interact with other central nervous system depressants. Your veterinarian will monitor your horse's response to ensure the protocol remains appropriate for their individual health status and will provide guidance on patient monitoring until the animal has returned to a normal physiological state.

Do I need a prescription to get romifidine for my pet?

Yes. Romifidine hydrochloride is a prescription medication and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all prescriptions before any medication is prepared or dispensed.

Can romifidine be compounded for my pet?

Yes. While romifidine is available in commercial injectable formats, Mixlab can compound this medication into specific strengths or alternative delivery forms if your veterinarian determines a customized preparation is necessary for your horse's needs. The decision between a commercial and compounded product rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

What is the difference between romifidine and other equine sedatives?

While romifidine belongs to the same class as xylazine or detomidine, veterinarians may select it because it is associated with less ataxia (lack of coordination) and a specific duration of effect. Your veterinarian will choose the most appropriate agent based on the horse's temperament and the specific requirements of the clinical procedure.

How is romifidine hydrochloride administered to horses?

Romifidine is typically administered by a veterinarian via intravenous injection to ensure a controlled onset of sedation. Your veterinarian will provide specific guidance regarding the administration protocol and will monitor the horse throughout the procedure to ensure safety and stability.

Mixlab is a licensed veterinary pharmacy dispensing both compounded and commercial medications, operating under the oversight of licensed pharmacists and in compliance with applicable state and federal pharmacy regulations. Compounded medications are prepared in compliance with USP standards and under PCAB-accredited practices. All medications dispensed by Mixlab require a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian.
