How to Give Oral Solution

Oral solutions are liquid medications that you give by mouth. In a solution, the medication is completely dissolved in the liquid, so it usually looks clear or evenly colored. Here's how to give it:

  1. Shake well each time to mix the medication (5-10 seconds).
  2. Measure the dose using the syringe/dropper provided or one recommended by your vet. Insert the top of the oral syringe into the bottle adapter. Turn the bottle upside down and pull the plunger until the medicine reaches the volume required
  3. Hold your pet steady: a towel or helper can assist with squirmy pets.
  4. Administer the dose slowly into the side of the mouth. Allow small pauses if needed for swallowing.
  5. Raise the head slightly to help the medication go down and clean any spills with a little water or tissue.
  6. Praise your pet and offer a treat or water (unless advised against feeding right after).
  7. Clean the syringe with water immediately after use. Store the bottle as directed, out of sunlight.
  8. Consistency is key: Shake each time, measure accurately, and contact your vet if any issues arise.

Altrenogest, commercially available as OvaMed™, is a synthetic progestin utilized in veterinary medicine for its ability to influence hormonal signaling. It is a prescription medication available for use in horses, requiring professional guidance and monitoring by a licensed veterinarian. It is frequently considered in the context of reproductive health for managing the estrus cycle in mares.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring.

At a pharmacological level, it is considered to influence the hormonal environment by mimicking the effects of progesterone, providing a method for addressing the timing of the heat cycle. Commonly observed effects are typically rare but may include behavioral shifts or localized changes in appetite. Because it is absorbed transdermally, individuals who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling the medication. Owners should wear gloves when applying the medication and follow all professional guidance for administration.

Do I need a prescription for OvaMed™?

Yes. OvaMed™ is a prescription medication and requires a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab ensures all legal and professional standards are met before dispensing.

Can OvaMed™ be compounded for my horse?

OvaMed™ is a commercial oral solution. If your veterinarian determines that a different flavor or concentration is necessary, Mixlab can discuss specialized compounding options for the active ingredient, altrenogest.

Why is this used for my mare's cycle?

Veterinarians discuss OvaMed™ because it is considered to influence the transition from the estrus cycle to a stable hormonal state. This provides a method for addressing behavioral shifts and timing reproductive events.

Should I wear gloves when handling this?

Yes. It is recommended to wear gloves to prevent the medication from being absorbed through your own skin. This provides a method for preventing accidental hormonal changes in humans.

How is OvaMed™ administered?

OvaMed™ is an oral solution typically administered directly into the mouth or mixed with food. Your veterinarian will provide professional guidance on the specific administration schedule for your horse.
