Novolin N is an intermediate-acting NPH (Neutral Protamine Hagedorn) insulin utilized extensively in veterinary medicine for managing diabetes. It is a prescription medication available for use in dogs and cats, requiring professional guidance and monitoring by a licensed veterinarian. It is frequently considered in the context of endocrine health for patients presented with inappropriately elevated blood sugar.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring.

At a pharmacological level, it is considered to influence glucose metabolism by mimicking the body's natural insulin release over an extended period. Commonly observed effects include behavioral shifts such as lethargy or increased hunger. Because insulin influences blood glucose, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of hypoglycemia, which may manifest as weakness or staggering. Owners should monitor for any unusual behavioral changes and contact their veterinarian promptly. Precise administration and consistent monitoring are clinical requirements for this medication.

Do I need a prescription for Novolin N?

Yes. Novolin N is a prescription medication and requires a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all requirements before preparing any medication.

Can Novolin N be compounded for my pet?

Novolin N is a commercial intermediate-acting insulin. While not typically compounded, Mixlab provides this medication as part of our full-service pharmacy to support your pet's diabetes management plan.

What type of syringe should I use?

Novolin N is a U-100 insulin, which means it is important to use U-100 insulin syringes for accurate dosing. Your veterinarian will provide guidance on the proper syringe type and administration technique.

How is Novolin N administered?

Novolin N is administered as a subcutaneous injection. Your veterinarian will provide professional training on the proper technique for administration and the specific type of syringes required for your pet's dose.

Why does my dog need a blood glucose curve?

Veterinarians recommend blood glucose curves to monitor the physiological response to the insulin over time. This provides a method for determining if the management approach remains suitable for your pet's needs.
