Imatinib (as Mesylate) is available as an FDA-approved commercial capsule and as a compounded formulation, prepared by Mixlab for veterinary use in dogs and cats. Available by prescription.

"The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Imatinib mesylate is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks specific enzymes involved in abnormal cell growth signaling. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for chronic myeloid leukemia and certain other cancers driven by the same signaling pathways.

In veterinary oncology, imatinib is used off-label in dogs and cats, most often for mast cell tumors carrying a specific genetic mutation in the same signaling pathway, and in some other tumor types. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness."

This medication is classified as hazardous — wear gloves when handling it and follow your veterinarian's instructions for waste disposal. Give with a full meal and water. Reported effects include nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, diarrhea, skin rash, and lethargy; more serious effects such as heart or liver problems, bleeding, or gastrointestinal ulceration require immediate veterinary attention. Dose adjustment may be needed in animals with liver or kidney disease. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Your veterinarian will likely recommend periodic bloodwork and other monitoring during treatment.

Do I need a prescription for imatinib?

Yes. Imatinib is available only by prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Is imatinib available as a commercial product or a compounded formulation?

Both. Mixlab can dispense the FDA-approved commercial capsule, or compound the active ingredient into an alternative strength or format if your veterinarian determines that better suits your pet's needs. The decision rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

What is imatinib used for in pets?

Imatinib is used in veterinary oncology, most often for certain mast cell tumors with a specific genetic marker. Your veterinarian determines whether this medication is appropriate based on tumor testing.

What should I watch for while my pet is on imatinib?

Contact your veterinarian if you notice vomiting, loss of appetite, bleeding, or lethargy. Periodic bloodwork and imaging are typically recommended to monitor treatment.
