EstRIOL is a short-acting natural estrogen (marketed for dogs as Incurin®) used to treat urinary incontinence in spayed female dogs. Given orally once daily, estriol helps restore urethral sphincter tone and significantly reduces urine leaking, offering an effective therapy for hormone-responsive incontinence in dogs with a lower incidence of side effects due to its short duration of action.

Use as directed by your veterinarian.

The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Estriol is a short-acting estrogen hormone utilized in veterinary medicine primarily for the management of hormone-responsive clinical signs in dogs. It is a prescription medication available for use in female dogs, requiring a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship before it can be dispensed. It is frequently considered in the context of urinary health for patients presented with incontinence following spaying.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.

Commonly observed effects include localized digestive changes such as vomiting or a temporary decrease in appetite. Some animals may exhibit behavioral shifts including vulvar swelling or signs of attraction from male dogs. Because estrogens can influence bone marrow function, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of weakness or bruising, although this is less common with estriol's shorter duration of action. Owners should monitor their pet for any significant shifts in energy and contact their veterinarian promptly with concerns.

Do I need a prescription for estriol?

Yes. Estriol is a prescription medication and requires a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all requirements before any medication is prepared or shipped.

Can estriol be compounded for my pet?

Estriol is available in certain commercial tablet formats. If your pet requires a different concentration or flavor, Mixlab can discuss compounded alternatives based on your veterinarian's prescription.

Why is estriol used for urinary leaking?

Veterinarians discuss estriol because it replaces the estrogen necessary to manage the strength of the urethral sphincter. By managing the tone of these muscles, it provides a method for addressing involuntary urine leakage.

How often does my dog take this?

Your veterinarian will determine the appropriate administration schedule based on your dog’s individual response. They often adjust the frequency once the observational signs of leaking are managed.

Are there long-term risks with estriol?

While estriol is characterized by a short duration of action, your veterinarian will provide a specific monitoring schedule to ensure the management approach remains suitable for your pet's long-term health.
