Esomeprazole Magnesium DR is an FDA-approved commercial delayed-release capsule, dispensed by Mixlab for veterinary use in dogs, cats and horses. Available by prescription.

Use as directed by your veterinarian.

The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid production. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and other acid-related conditions.

In veterinary medicine, esomeprazole is used off-label in dogs and cats to reduce stomach acid in conditions such as gastritis, esophagitis, or ulcer disease. Use in horses is less established than the related drug omeprazole, which is the standard acid-suppressing agent in equine practice; your veterinarian determines whether esomeprazole is an appropriate alternative for your horse. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring.

Give on an empty stomach, generally 30 to 60 minutes before feeding, for best absorption, and do not crush or split the delayed-release capsule unless your veterinarian or pharmacist specifically directs otherwise. Commonly reported effects include vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite. Long-term acid suppression can affect the absorption of certain nutrients and other medications — tell your veterinarian about all other medications your animal is taking.
