How to Give Anhydrous Oral Suspension

Oral Suspension (Anhydrous) is a liquid medication that does not contain water in its base. This might be an oil-based or other special base to help stabilize the medicine. It will look like a regular liquid medication, but often needs a good shake because the drug can settle. Here's how to give it:

  1. Shake well each time to mix the medication (5-10 seconds).
  2. Measure the dose using the syringe/dropper provided or one recommended by your vet. Insert the top of the oral syringe into the bottle adapter. Turn the bottle upside down and pull the plunger until the medicine reaches the volume required
  3. Hold your pet steady: a towel or helper can assist with squirmy pets.
  4. Administer the dose slowly into the side of the mouth. Allow small pauses if needed for swallowing.
  5. Raise the head slightly to help the medication go down and clean any spills with a little water or tissue.
  6. Praise your pet and offer a treat or water (unless advised against feeding right after).
  7. Clean the syringe with water immediately after use. Store the bottle as directed, out of sunlight.
  8. Consistency is key: Shake each time, measure accurately, and contact your vet if any issues arise.

Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic utilized in veterinary medicine for the management of specific bacterial infections and gastrointestinal motility challenges. It is a prescription medication available for use in dogs, cats and horses, requiring a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship before it can be dispensed. It is frequently considered in the context of infectious diseases or as a prokinetic agent to support digestive movement.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.

Commonly observed effects include localized digestive changes such as vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal cramping. At lower doses, veterinarians discuss its use for managing stomach emptying, while higher doses are directed toward bacterial protein synthesis inhibition. Owners should monitor for observational signs of decreased appetite or behavioral shifts including lethargy. It is typically used with extra caution in horses, as it can influence intestinal flora significantly. Contact your veterinarian promptly with any concerns regarding the patient's response.

Do I need a prescription for erythromycin?

Yes. Erythromycin is a prescription medication and requires a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all legal requirements before any medication is prepared or shipped.

Can erythromycin be compounded for my pet?

Yes. Mixlab specializes in compounding erythromycin into customized strengths and flavored oral formats, such as flavored oral liquids or treats, to support easier administration. The decision rests with your prescribing veterinarian.

Why is erythromycin used for my pet’s digestion?

Veterinarians discuss erythromycin because it mimics the hormone motilin, which signals the digestive tract to move. This provides a method for managing stomach emptying in pets with certain motility challenges.

Can I give this to my foal?

In foals, erythromycin is frequently discussed for managing specific respiratory infections. However, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of heat intolerance or diarrhea, as these are clinical priorities in young horses.

What if my pet vomits after the dose?

Localized digestive upset is a common observation with macrolide antibiotics. Your veterinarian may recommend adjusting the administration schedule or giving the medication with food to may support your pet's comfort.
