Cabergoline is available as an FDA-approved commercial tablet and as a compounded formulation, prepared by Mixlab for veterinary use in dogs and cats. Available by prescription.

The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Cabergoline is a dopamine agonist that suppresses prolactin secretion. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for the treatment of hyperprolactinemic disorders.

In veterinary medicine, cabergoline is used off-label in dogs and cats to manage pseudopregnancy (false pregnancy) and to suppress lactation. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.

Give with food to reduce stomach upset. Commonly reported effects include vomiting and reduced appetite; low blood pressure has also been reported, particularly with the first few doses. Avoid use in pregnant animals unless pregnancy termination is the intended outcome, and avoid use in animals with liver disease. Contact your veterinarian if vomiting is persistent or if your pet seems weak or lethargic.

Do I need a prescription for cabergoline?

Yes. Cabergoline is available only by prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Is cabergoline available as a commercial product or a compounded formulation?

Both. Mixlab can dispense the FDA-approved commercial tablet, or compound the active ingredient into an alternative strength or format if your veterinarian determines that better suits your pet's needs. The decision rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

What is cabergoline used for in pets?

Cabergoline is used to manage false pregnancy and to suppress lactation in dogs and cats. Your veterinarian determines whether it's appropriate for your pet's situation.

What should I watch for while my pet is on cabergoline?

Contact your veterinarian if you notice persistent vomiting, weakness, or lethargy.
