Advantage Multi is an FDA-approved topical (spot-on) solution containing imidacloprid and moxidectin, for dogs and cats. Available by prescription.

Advantage Multi is an FDA-approved topical medication for dogs and cats. According to the FDA-approved labeling, it is applied to the skin for the prevention of heartworm disease and for the treatment and control of certain external and internal parasites; the specific claims and approved species depend on the product version. Your veterinarian determines the appropriate product and dose for your pet.

Imidacloprid acts on the nervous system of susceptible external parasites by binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and moxidectin is a macrocyclic lactone that acts on glutamate-gated chloride channels in susceptible parasites. Together they cover a broad parasite range in a single topical application.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring.

Advantage Multi is dosed by species and body weight, so use only the product formulated for your pet. Your veterinarian will typically confirm your dog is free of heartworm infection before starting a preventive. Apply to intact skin where the pet cannot lick it and keep treated pets separated until the application site is dry. Contact your veterinarian if you notice application-site irritation, drooling or changes in behavior.

Do I need a prescription for this?

Yes. This is a prescription product and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy after a valid prescription is received from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies every prescription before dispensing.

Why does my pet need a heartworm test first?

Veterinarians generally confirm a dog is free of existing heartworm infection before starting a preventive, because giving a preventive to an infected animal can cause a reaction. Your veterinarian will advise on testing.

Can I use the dog product on my cat?

No. Dog and cat products are formulated and dosed differently. Use only the version labeled for your pet's species and weight, as directed by your veterinarian.

How should I handle it during application?

Apply to the skin where your pet cannot lick it, wash your hands afterward and keep the treated area away from children and other pets until it is dry.
