Zafirlukast is an FDA-approved commercial tablet containing zafirlukast, dispensed by Mixlab for veterinary use in dogs. Available by prescription.

"The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Zafirlukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks inflammatory mediators involved in airway constriction. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma.

In veterinary medicine, published experience with zafirlukast is limited — the clearest documented use is a single case report describing management of refractory cough in a dog with chronic bronchitis. Your veterinarian determines whether this medication is appropriate for your pet's specific respiratory condition. Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring."

Reported effects in humans include headache and gastrointestinal upset; veterinary safety data is limited. This drug can interact with other medications metabolized by the liver, including certain anticoagulants — tell your veterinarian about all other medications your pet is taking. Use only under close veterinary supervision given the limited veterinary experience with this drug.
