UlcerGard Paste is the only over-the-counter medication FDA-approved to prevent the formation and recurrence of gastric ulcers in horses, particularly during times of environmental or physical stress. This specially formulated paste works by suppressing the production of stomach acid, creating a protective environment for the stomach lining during transport, training, or competition. It is designed for easy oral administration with a calibrated syringe to ensure accurate dosing for horses of all sizes.
The active ingredient is 2.28 g of Omeprazole per syringe, contained in an edible paste base.
To prevent stomach ulcers, administer a daily dose of 1 mg per kg of body weight (or 0.45 mg per lb) by depressing the syringe plunger to the appropriate weight mark and placing the paste on the back of the horse's tongue. For most adult horses, this is equivalent to 1/4 syringe per day given for 8 to 28 consecutive days during periods of stress.
