SALIX® (Furosemide) is an FDA-approved preparation containing Furosemide, for veterinary use. Available by prescription.

Veterinarians most commonly consider Salix when a patient is presented with clinical signs of congestive heart failure or pulmonary edema, where removing fluid from the lungs is a primary clinical objective. It is also frequently discussed in the context of certain kidney conditions or to manage localized swelling and tissue stress. In equine medicine, Salix is a frequent point of discussion for the management of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) in performance horses. By influencing how the kidneys process electrolytes, your veterinarian can manage the total volume of fluid circulating within the body.

At a pharmacological level, furosemide acts by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the thick ascending limb of the Loop of Henle within the kidney. By blocking the transport of these ions, the medication creates an osmotic gradient that causes a significant volume of water to be excreted as urine rather than being reabsorbed into the bloodstream. This rapid increase in urine production (diuresis) results in a reduction of plasma volume and a decrease in blood pressure, which helps to mobilize and clear fluid that has shifted into the tissues or body cavities. Your veterinarian will determine whether Salix is appropriate based on your pet’s weight, species and the specific clinical nature of the fluid challenge.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Commonly observed effects of Salix administration include a significant increase in the frequency and volume of urination, as well as increased thirst (polydipsia) as the body attempts to maintain hydration. Because Salix promotes the excretion of electrolytes along with water, your veterinarian will monitor for shifts in potassium, sodium and chloride levels through regular diagnostic testing. In some patients, owners may observe mild gastrointestinal changes, temporary lethargy or a decrease in appetite. If you observe significant weakness, persistent vomiting or signs of extreme dehydration, contact your veterinarian promptly. This medication is typically used with extra caution or avoided in patients with known anuria (an inability to produce urine), severe electrolyte imbalances or significant liver impairment. It is also carefully evaluated in patients with pre-existing kidney disease, as the diuretic effect can influence renal perfusion. Before starting a protocol involving Salix, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other prescriptions and supplements your pet is receiving, as it may interact with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) or certain antibiotics. Your veterinarian is the right person to design a comprehensive monitoring plan and provide guidance on maintaining appropriate water access for your pet during administration.

Do I need a prescription to get Salix for my pet?

Yes. Salix (furosemide) is a prescription medication and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy like Mixlab upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all authorizations before any medication is prepared or shipped to your home or clinic.

Can Salix be compounded for my pet?

Yes. While Salix is available as a commercial tablet and injectable, Mixlab can compound the active ingredient, furosemide, into specialized strengths or flavored dosage forms—such as oral liquids, treats or chews—if your veterinarian determines a customized preparation better suits your pet's needs. The decision between a commercial and compounded product rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

Why does my pet drink more water while taking Salix?

Veterinarians discuss increased thirst as a common response to Salix because the medication is actively moving excess fluid out of the body through the kidneys. As your pet loses more water through urination, their natural thirst mechanism is triggered to help prevent dehydration and maintain a healthy fluid balance.

What is Salix used for in performance horses?

In equine medicine, veterinarians frequently consider Salix for horses that experience exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). It is used to manage the pressure within the pulmonary capillaries during strenuous activity, which is studied for its role in reducing the incidence of bleeding in the lungs during exercise.

Mixlab is a licensed veterinary pharmacy dispensing both compounded and commercial medications, operating under the oversight of licensed pharmacists and in compliance with applicable state and federal pharmacy regulations. Compounded medications are prepared in compliance with USP standards and under PCAB-accredited practices. All medications dispensed by Mixlab require a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian.
