Royal Canin Canine Dental Medium and Large Dog is a veterinary-exclusive adult dog food specially formulated to support your medium or large dog’s oral health. It’s been awarded the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) “Helps Control Tartar” seal of approval, as it’s clinically proven to effectively reduce tartar buildup. It contains calcium and phosphorus to help support healthy teeth, and the uniquely designed kibble size and shape encourages chewing, which creates a tooth-brushing effect to help reduce plaque accumulation and tartar buildup. Plus, it contains omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chondroitin, which help maintain healthy bones and joints.

This therapeutic canine diet utilizes a mechanical and chemical strategy to manage dental health in larger breeds. It is a veterinary-authorized diet frequently considered for dogs at risk of periodontal disease.

This is a veterinary-authorized therapeutic diet formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional adequacy standards. It requires authorization from a licensed veterinarian and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

At a nutritional level, it manages plaque and tartar by utilizing a specific kibble size and texture for mechanical scrubbing, combined with calcium chelators. Commonly observed effects include fresher breath and cleaner teeth. Because it features a larger kibble size, it may be considered in the context of managing the chewing needs of bigger dogs. Owners should monitor for observational signs of oral comfort.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Royal Canin Dental requires professional authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all legal and professional standards.

How does the kibble clean teeth?

Veterinarians discuss this formula because the kibble acts to resist crumbling, providing a mechanical scrubbing method to help scrape away plaque.

What are calcium chelators?

These are ingredients that bind calcium in the saliva. This may be considered in the context of managing the buildup of dental tartar (calculus) on the teeth.

Does this replace brushing?

While it may be considered in the context of managing dental health, veterinarians typically recommend it alongside regular brushing and professional cleanings.

Is this safe for all large dogs?

Your veterinarian will determine if the kibble texture is appropriate for your pet's specific oral health status and ability to chew.
