Rifampin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic for dogs, cats, and horses. It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA polymerase, an enzyme necessary for bacterial RNA synthesis and protein production. In veterinary protocols, it is used to target susceptible intracellular bacterial organisms, often in combination with other antimicrobial agents to broaden coverage and prevent bacterial resistance.
