The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Prednisone is a synthetic glucocorticoid utilized extensively in veterinary medicine for its potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. It is a prescription medication available for use in dogs, requiring a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship. It is frequently considered in the context of allergies or immune-mediated diseases for patients presented with significant swelling or overactive immune responses.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.

At a pharmacological level, it manages the production of inflammatory mediators and is used to modulate the activity of lymphocytes. Commonly observed effects include behavioral shifts such as increased thirst and urination (polyuria/polydipsia) and a localized increase in appetite. Because it manages systemic signaling, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of sensitivity through regular blood work. It is typically converted to prednisolone by the liver, making it more common for use in canine patients. Owners should follow a specific tapering schedule provided by their veterinarian.

Do I need a prescription for prednisone?

Yes. Prednisone is a prescription medication and requires a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab ensures all professional standards are met before dispensing.

Can prednisone be compounded for my dog?

Yes. Mixlab specializes in compounding prednisone into customized strengths and flavored oral formats, such as flavored oral liquids or treats, to support easier administration.

Why can't I stop this medication suddenly?

Stopping prednisone abruptly may lead to a temporary hormonal imbalance (Addisonian crisis). Your veterinarian will offer an approach to gradually tapering the dose to ensure your pet’s safety.

Is prednisone the same as prednisolone?

Prednisone is converted by the liver into prednisolone. While dogs do this, cats are less efficient, which is why veterinarians often prefer prednisolone for feline patients.

Will this make my pet more hungry?

An increased appetite is a commonly observed effect of corticosteroids. Your veterinarian will provide guidance on managing your pet’s diet to support their health during the course of management.
