Posaconazole DR is an FDA-approved commercial delayed-release product, dispensed by Mixlab for veterinary use in dogs and cats. Available by prescription.

The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Posaconazole is a triazole antifungal that inhibits a fungal enzyme needed for cell membrane synthesis. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for the prevention and treatment of certain invasive fungal infections.

In veterinary medicine, posaconazole is used off-label in dogs and cats for serious systemic fungal infections, sometimes when other antifungals are not well tolerated or are not effective against the specific organism involved. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring.

Give with food to improve absorption, unless your veterinarian directs otherwise. Regular liver enzyme testing is recommended during treatment, since hepatotoxicity has been reported. Posaconazole has significant interactions with many other drugs due to its effect on liver metabolism enzymes — tell your veterinarian about all other medications your pet is taking. Do not crush or split this delayed-release product unless specifically directed.
