Polyglycan is a veterinary prescription injectable solution used in horses and dogs to replenish and normalize synovial joint fluid. It is primarily used to restore joint health and improve mobility, particularly after joint surgery.

Polyglycan contains three key glycosaminoglycans (GAGs): hyaluronic acid, sodium chondroitin sulfate, and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine.

Giving your pet an injection might feel intimidating at first, but with practice, it becomes routine. Follow these steps for safe and stress-free injections.

Get Your Supplies Ready

  1. Medication vial or pre-filled syringe
  2. Alcohol swabs
  3. Sterile syringe & needle (if not pre-filled)
  4. Sharps container for safe needle disposal

Drawing Up the Dose (if needed)

  1. Clean the vial top with an alcohol swab
  2. Attach needle to syringe
  3. Pull in air equal to the dose
  4. Insert needle into vial, push air in
  5. Draw out the correct dose
  6. Tap out air bubbles

Pick the Injection Site

  1. Subcutaneous (under the skin): Loose skin between shoulder blades or side
  2. Intramuscular (into muscle): As directed by your vet

Prep the Area

  1. Pinch a fold of skin to form a “tent” (for subcutaneous). Wipe with alcohol if recommended.

Inject the Medication

  1. Hold the syringe like a pencil
  2. Insert the needle into the base of the skin tent at a 45° angle
  3. Push the plunger slowly to inject

After the Injection

  1. Remove the needle smoothly
  2. Place it immediately in the sharps container (don’t recap)
  3. Pat the area and give your pet praise or a treat

Safety Tips

  1. Never reuse needles
  2. Always dispose of used needles properly
  3. Ask your vet for help if unsure

Hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine, commercially available as Polyglycan, is a sterile injectable solution utilized for localized joint management. It is a prescription medication available for use in multiple species, including dogs and horses, frequently considered by veterinarians for patients presented with orthopedic health challenges following surgery or trauma. Your veterinarian will determine the clinical appropriateness based on joint diagnostics.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring.

At a pharmacological level, it is considered to influence the health of the joint environment by providing essential components associated with synovial fluid and cartilage maintenance. Commonly observed effects include localized changes at the injection site such as temporary swelling or discomfort. Because it is a sterile preparation, your veterinarian will follow professional aseptic techniques for administration. Owners should monitor for any persistent redness or behavioral shifts and contact their veterinarian promptly with any concerns regarding the patient's response to the medication.

Do I need a prescription for Polyglycan?

Yes. Polyglycan is a prescription sterile injectable and requires a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab ensures all professional standards are met before dispensing.

How is Polyglycan administered?

Polyglycan is typically administered as an injection, often directly into the joint or intravenously. Your veterinarian is the right person to perform this procedure and provide professional guidance on the schedule.

Why is this used after joint surgery?

Veterinarians discuss Polyglycan because it is considered to support the replenishment of joint fluid. This provides a method for addressing joint comfort and mobility during the recovery phase.

Can I give this to my horse at home?

Your veterinarian will determine if administration is appropriate for home use and provide professional training on the proper technique. It is important to follow the professional schedule provided.

What should I watch for at the injection site?

You should monitor for observational signs like heat, swelling or pain at the site. If the area appears increasingly irritated or your pet becomes unusually lame, contact your veterinarian immediately.
