A combination of Piroxicam and Famotidine is used in veterinary medicine, primarily in dogs, to treat certain cancers while protecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract from NSAID-induced irritation or ulcers.

Use as directed by your veterinarian.

This compounded formulation combines piroxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), with famotidine, an H2-receptor antagonist — two different drug classes. In compounding practice, clinicians may consider a combination like this for a multi-targeted approach. Your veterinarian determines whether it is appropriate based on your animal's diagnostic findings.

At a pharmacological level, piroxicam is considered to exert its anti-inflammatory effects primarily through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis via cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition. Its mechanism is thought to involve COX-dependent effects on the immune environment and antiangiogenic activity, rather than direct cytotoxic effects. Famotidine is considered to work by inhibiting H2-receptors in the stomach lining, which is associated with reduced gastric acid production. This combination is used to address the gastric irritation that NSAIDs may be associated with. Your veterinarian will guide duration and monitoring requirements based on your pet's individual clinical response.

This description reflects the general pharmacology of the active ingredient's drug class; your veterinarian determines whether this approach is appropriate for your animal.

At a pharmacological level, piroxicam influences prostaglandin synthesis and can affect renal function, GI mucosal integrity and platelet aggregation. Famotidine is included to support gastric protection. Commonly observed effects include localized digestive changes such as vomiting or diarrhea. Because piroxicam can influence renal function, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of kidney stress through regular blood testing. Owners should monitor for significant behavioral shifts, dark stools or GI discomfort and contact their veterinarian promptly with any concerns.

This preparation is not recommended in patients with known hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Extra caution is considered in patients with active or historical GI ulcer disease, bleeding disorders or severely compromised cardiovascular function. Before starting a protocol, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other prescriptions and supplements your pet is receiving. Your veterinarian will provide guidance on the necessary duration of use and monitoring schedule for your pet.

Do I need a prescription for this combination?

Yes. This combination requires a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian before it can be dispensed. Mixlab verifies all legal and professional authorizations.

Can this be compounded for my pet?

Yes. Mixlab specializes in compounding piroxicam and famotidine into customized flavored oral formats, such as capsules or flavored liquids, to support easier administration for your dog.

Why is famotidine combined with piroxicam?

Veterinarians discuss this combination because NSAIDs may sometimes irritate the stomach lining. Famotidine is considered to influence stomach acid and provides a method for supporting gastric comfort during long-term use.

What signs of stomach irritation should I watch for?

Important observational signs include persistent vomiting, a decrease in appetite or very dark, tarry stools. If you notice these shifts, contact your veterinarian immediately for a clinical review.

What monitoring is required for my dog?

Your veterinarian will recommend periodic check-ups and blood work to monitor kidney function and liver enzymes. This monitoring ensures the protocol remains safe for your pet's overall health.
