Phytonadione, also known as Vitamin K1, is a fat-soluble vitamin utilized in veterinary medicine for managing the coagulation cascade. It is a prescription medication available for use in multiple species, frequently considered by veterinarians in the context of emergency care for patients presented with anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity.

At a pharmacological level, it provide a clinical requirement for the synthesis of clotting factors II, VII, IX and X in the liver. Commonly observed effects are typically rare but may include localized changes at the injection site. Because it influences blood stability, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of recovery through regular coagulation tests. Owners should monitor for any unusual bruising or bleeding and contact their veterinarian immediately with any concerns.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Professional-strength Phytonadione is a prescription medication and requires a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab ensures all requirements are met.

Why is this used for rat poison ingestion?

Veterinarians discuss Vitamin K1 because many rodenticides block the body's natural Vitamin K, leading to bleeding. Supplementation may be considered in the context of managing blood clotting safety.

Is this the same as human Vitamin K?

While the vitamin is the same, veterinarians prescribe specific doses and formulations tailored to the pet's size and health status. You should only use the approach authorized by your veterinarian.

How long does my pet take this?

Anticoagulant rodenticides can stay in the body for several weeks. Your veterinarian will determine the necessary duration of the Vitamin K1 course based on follow-up blood tests.

Should I give this with food?

Giving Vitamin K1 with a fatty meal can increase its absorption. Your veterinarian will provide specific guidance on the most appropriate administration schedule.
