Nitrofurantoin is an oral antibiotic that concentrates in the urine, used in dogs and cats to treat urinary tract infections, particularly when caused by bacteria resistant to more common antibiotics. It is usually reserved for recurrent or difficult UTIs and is given with food (to reduce stomach upset), targeting bacteria in the bladder to clear infection.
