Naxcel (Ceftiofur Sodium) is an FDA-approved preparation containing Ceftiofur Sodium, for veterinary use. Available by prescription.

Powder medications are meant to be mixed into food or treats, not given on their own (since most pets won’t lick up plain powder). The key is to mix it into something tasty so your pet eats the entire dose.

How to Give It:

  1. Measure the dose using the included scoop or follow the instructions. If you’re unsure how much to give, ask your vet or pharmacist.
  2. Mix it with a small amount of soft food or treat—like wet food, baby food (meat flavor), peanut butter (xylitol-free), yogurt, or cheese. Use just enough to hide the powder so your pet finishes it all in one go.
  3. Stir it well to blend the powder in evenly. Add a splash of water if needed to make it smoother.
  4. Offer it when your pet is a little hungry, and watch to make sure they eat the whole thing.
  5. If your pet refuses, try something else they love next time. For cats, you can also try smearing the paste on their paw to lick off (only if safe and comfortable).
  6. For large animals, mix the powder into a small portion of feed with water or molasses, then follow with the rest of their food once they’ve eaten the medicated part.
  7. Store the powder in a cool, dry place with the lid closed tightly.

Never give powder straight into your pet’s mouth—it can be dangerous if inhaled.

Veterinarians most commonly consider Naxcel when a horse or livestock patient is presented with clinical signs of respiratory disease, such as equine pneumonia or pleuropneumonia associated with Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus. It is also frequently a point of discussion for managing localized tissue stress associated with skin infections or foot rot in cattle. By intervening during the bacterial replication cycle, your veterinarian can manage the physiological progression of the infection.

At a pharmacological level, ceftiofur sodium acts as a third-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It functions by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are enzymes essential for the final cross-linking of the peptidoglycan layer in the bacterial cell wall. Without a stable cell wall, the bacteria undergo osmotic lysis and are destroyed. Ceftiofur is characterized by its resistance to many beta-lactamase enzymes, which allows it to remain effective against certain bacteria that might otherwise be resistant to earlier-generation medications. Your veterinarian will determine the appropriate use of Naxcel based on the patient’s species, weight and results from diagnostic testing such as culture and sensitivity profiles.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Commonly observed effects of Naxcel administration include localized swelling, soreness or sensitivity at the site of injection. In some animals, transient gastrointestinal changes such as loose stools or a temporary decrease in appetite may occur as a result of shifts in the internal microbiome. Because ceftiofur is a beta-lactam antibiotic, there is a potential for hypersensitivity reactions; owners should watch for signs of hives, skin rashes or respiratory distress immediately following administration. If you observe persistent physical distress or significant behavioral changes, contact your veterinarian promptly. This medication is typically used with extra caution or avoided in animals with a known history of hypersensitivity to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics. It is also carefully evaluated in patients with significant renal impairment, as the medication is primarily excreted through the kidneys. Before starting a protocol, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other prescriptions and supplements your pet is receiving. Your veterinarian is the right person to assess your pet's individual profile and provide guidance on the necessary duration of therapy to ensure the management approach remains suitable for the specific bacterial challenge.

Do I need a prescription to get Naxcel for my pet?

Yes. Naxcel is a prescription antibiotic and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all authorizations before any medication is prepared or shipped to your stable or farm.

Can Naxcel be compounded for my pet?

While Naxcel is available as a specific commercial injectable powder for reconstitution, Mixlab carries a wide range of antibiotic options. If your veterinarian determines that a different concentration or a flavored oral compounded alternative better suits your individual pet's needs, our compounding team can prepare that customized formulation with a valid prescription.

What is ceftiofur sodium used for in horses?

Veterinarians commonly discuss ceftiofur sodium for the management of equine respiratory infections, such as pneumonia. It is selected for its broad spectrum of activity against many common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria that affect the respiratory tree.

Should I be concerned about a lump at the injection site?

Localized swelling or sensitivity is a commonly observed effect at the site where Naxcel is injected. While these reactions are usually temporary, you should monitor the area and contact your veterinarian if the swelling persists, becomes excessively painful or begins to drain fluid.

Mixlab is a licensed veterinary pharmacy dispensing both compounded and commercial medications, operating under the oversight of licensed pharmacists and in compliance with applicable state and federal pharmacy regulations. Compounded medications are prepared in compliance with USP standards and under PCAB-accredited practices. All medications dispensed by Mixlab require a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian.
