Mometavet Otic Suspension is a prescription medication for dogs used to treat bacterial and fungal ear infections while helping reduce inflammation, redness, and discomfort. Its triple-action formula combines an antibiotic, antifungal, and corticosteroid to support fast, effective relief for canine otitis externa.

Each gram of Mometavet Otic Suspension contains 3 mg of gentamicin base (as gentamicin sulfate), 1 mg of mometasone furoate anhydrous, and 10 mg of clotrimazole. The formula is delivered in a mineral oil-based suspension with a plasticized hydrocarbon gel to help coat and protect the ear canal.

How to Give Otic Suspension Ear Medication

Otic suspension are creamy ear meds that coat the ear canal to treat infections or inflammation. Here’s how to give them safely:

  1. Warm the medication in your hands for a minute (don’t overheat).
  2. Secure your pet comfortably. Lift the ear flap to straighten the canal.
  3. Clean the ear first only if your vet advised it.
  4. Add drops: Use the dropper or syringe to apply the prescribed amount into the ear canal. Don’t insert too deep into the ear canal.
  5. Massage the base of the ear for 20–30 seconds to help spread the medicine.
  6. Let your pet shake their head, then gently wipe away any excess.
  7. Repeat for the other ear if needed.
  8. Praise, treat, and wash your hands.
  9. Use for the full duration prescribed—don’t stop early, even if the ear looks better.

Mometavet is an FDA-approved otic (ear) suspension for dogs containing gentamicin, an antibiotic; mometasone, a corticosteroid; and clotrimazole, an antifungal. According to the FDA-approved labeling, it is used in the ear canal; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your dog.

Gentamicin acts against susceptible bacteria, clotrimazole acts against susceptible fungi/yeast and mometasone modulates the inflammatory response in the ear canal.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.
