The combination of Misoprostol and Piroxicam is used in veterinary medicine, especially in dogs, to treat certain cancers and to protect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract from NSAID-induced damage.

How to Give Anhydrous Oral Suspension

Oral Suspension (Anhydrous) is a liquid medication that does not contain water in its base. This might be an oil-based or other special base to help stabilize the medicine. It will look like a regular liquid medication, but often needs a good shake because the drug can settle. Here's how to give it:

  1. Shake well each time to mix the medication (5-10 seconds).
  2. Measure the dose using the syringe/dropper provided or one recommended by your vet. Insert the top of the oral syringe into the bottle adapter. Turn the bottle upside down and pull the plunger until the medicine reaches the volume required
  3. Hold your pet steady: a towel or helper can assist with squirmy pets.
  4. Administer the dose slowly into the side of the mouth. Allow small pauses if needed for swallowing.
  5. Raise the head slightly to help the medication go down and clean any spills with a little water or tissue.
  6. Praise your pet and offer a treat or water (unless advised against feeding right after).
  7. Clean the syringe with water immediately after use. Store the bottle as directed, out of sunlight.
  8. Consistency is key: Shake each time, measure accurately, and contact your vet if any issues arise.

This compounded formulation combines misoprostol, a prostaglandin analog, with piroxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) — two different drug classes. In compounding practice, clinicians may consider a combination like this for a multi-targeted approach. Your veterinarian determines whether it is appropriate based on your animal's diagnostic findings.

This description reflects the general pharmacology of the active ingredient's drug class; your veterinarian determines whether this approach is appropriate for your animal.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.

At a pharmacological level, piroxicam is considered to influence the COX enzyme system while misoprostol is considered to provide cytoprotection to the gastric mucosa by influencing acid secretion and supporting bicarbonate production. Commonly observed effects include localized digestive changes such as vomiting or diarrhea. Because NSAIDs influence renal function, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of kidney stress through regular blood work. Pregnant individuals should avoid handling misoprostol as it may influence uterine tissue. Owners should monitor for dark stools and contact their veterinarian promptly.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. This combination requires a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian before it can be dispensed. Mixlab verifies all legal requirements before any medication is prepared or shipped.

Can this be compounded for my pet?

Yes. Mixlab specializes in compounding misoprostol and piroxicam into customized strengths and flavored oral formats, such as flavored oral liquids or capsules, to suit your dog's needs.

Why is misoprostol added to an anti-inflammatory?

Veterinarians discuss misoprostol because it is considered to support the stomach lining from the potential irritation associated with NSAIDs. This provides a method for managing comfort in pets receiving long-term anti-inflammatory management.

Are there safety precautions for handling this?

Yes. Because misoprostol may influence uterine tissue, pregnant individuals should wear gloves when handling the medication. This provides a method for preventing accidental exposure.

What monitoring does my dog need?

Your veterinarian will recommend periodic blood tests to monitor kidney and liver function. This monitoring ensures the management approach remains suitable for your pet's overall health status.
