Medetomidine HCl is an FDA-approved preparation containing Medetomidine HCl, for veterinary use. Available by prescription.

Giving your pet an injection might feel intimidating at first, but with practice, it becomes routine. Follow these steps for safe and stress-free injections.

Get Your Supplies Ready

  1. Medication vial or pre-filled syringe
  2. Alcohol swabs
  3. Sterile syringe & needle (if not pre-filled)
  4. Sharps container for safe needle disposal

Drawing Up the Dose (if needed)

  1. Clean the vial top with an alcohol swab
  2. Attach needle to syringe
  3. Pull in air equal to the dose
  4. Insert needle into vial, push air in
  5. Draw out the correct dose
  6. Tap out air bubbles

Pick the Injection Site

  1. Subcutaneous (under the skin): Loose skin between shoulder blades or side
  2. Intramuscular (into muscle): As directed by your vet

Prep the Area

  1. Pinch a fold of skin to form a “tent” (for subcutaneous). Wipe with alcohol if recommended.

Inject the Medication

  1. Hold the syringe like a pencil
  2. Insert the needle into the base of the skin tent at a 45° angle
  3. Push the plunger slowly to inject

After the Injection

  1. Remove the needle smoothly
  2. Place it immediately in the sharps container (don’t recap)
  3. Pat the area and give your pet praise or a treat

Safety Tips

  1. Never reuse needles
  2. Always dispose of used needles properly
  3. Ask your vet for help if unsure

Veterinarians most commonly consider medetomidine HCl when the clinical objective is profound sedation and physical restraint in a non-compliant or anxious patient. It is frequently a point of discussion for short-duration procedures where localized tissue stress must be managed or when a pre-anesthetic component is required to potentially allow for a lower total amount of other medications needed for general anesthesia. By modulating specific receptors in the central nervous system, your veterinarian can manage the patient’s state of consciousness and physiological response to external stimuli.

At a pharmacological level, medetomidine HCl acts as a selective agonist for alpha-2 adrenoceptors located in the brain and spinal cord. Stimulation of these receptors inhibits the release of norepinephrine, a key neurotransmitter involved in maintaining alertness and mediating the stress response. This results in dose-dependent sedation, muscle relaxation and visceral analgesia. Medetomidine is a racemic mixture of two optical isomers, with the dexmedetomidine component responsible for the majority of its clinical activity. Your veterinarian will determine whether medetomidine HCl is appropriate based on the species, age, cardiovascular status and the specific procedural management goals.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Commonly observed effects of medetomidine HCl administration include a significant decrease in heart rate (bradycardia), initial hypertension followed by a decrease in blood pressure and a drop in body temperature (hypothermia). Some animals exhibit transient respiratory changes, pale mucous membranes or vomiting shortly after administration. Because medetomidine has a profound effect on cardiovascular health, your veterinarian will monitor the patient’s vital signs throughout the duration of sedation. In many clinical settings, an alpha-2 antagonist may be discussed to reverse the sedative effects once a procedure is complete. This medication is typically used with extra caution or avoided in patients with known cardiovascular disease, respiratory impairment, kidney or liver dysfunction, shock or severe dehydration. It is also carefully evaluated in very young, geriatric or pregnant animals, as the physiological shifts associated with alpha-2 agonists may be less tolerated in these categories. Before starting a protocol, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other supplements and prescriptions your pet is receiving, as medetomidine may interact with other central nervous system depressants or anticholinergic agents. Your veterinarian is the right person to design a comprehensive monitoring plan and provide guidance on the necessary recovery environment to ensure the management approach remains suitable for your pet's individual needs.

Do I need a prescription to get medetomidine HCl for my pet?

Yes. Medetomidine HCl is a potent prescription medication and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all authorizations before any medication is prepared or shipped.

Can medetomidine HCl be compounded for my pet?

Yes. While medetomidine is available as a commercial injectable, Mixlab can compound this medication into specialized strengths or alternative formats if your veterinarian determines a customized preparation better suits an individual patient's clinical needs. The decision between a commercial and compounded product rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

Why is medetomidine HCl used for pet exams?

Veterinarians discuss medetomidine HCl for exams because it provides reliable sedation and muscle relaxation, which allows for a more thorough physical assessment of an anxious or fearful pet. It also provides a degree of pain management, making it helpful for procedures that might otherwise cause the pet significant discomfort.

How long does the sedation from medetomidine HCl last?

The duration of sedation is typically dose-dependent and can vary based on the patient’s metabolism and the specific clinical context. Your veterinarian will provide guidance on the expected recovery time and may use a reversal agent to lift the sedation more quickly if appropriate for your pet.

Mixlab is a licensed veterinary pharmacy dispensing both compounded and commercial medications, operating under the oversight of licensed pharmacists and in compliance with applicable state and federal pharmacy regulations. Compounded medications are prepared in compliance with USP standards and under PCAB-accredited practices. All medications dispensed by Mixlab require a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian.
