Loratadine is available as an FDA-approved commercial tablet and as a compounded formulation, prepared by Mixlab for veterinary use in dogs and cats. Available by prescription.

"The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Loratadine is a second-generation antihistamine that blocks histamine at the H1 receptor, reducing itching, redness, and swelling associated with allergic reactions. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for the relief of allergy symptoms.

In veterinary medicine, loratadine is used off-label in dogs and cats for mild allergic reactions. It does not address more severe, cytokine-driven skin allergy processes and is generally considered only mildly effective for chronic skin allergies. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness."

Commonly reported effects include mild drowsiness, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal upset; less commonly, increased thirst or reduced tear production. Use with caution in animals with liver or kidney disease, dry eye, or during pregnancy. Some human loratadine products (for example, Claritin-D) contain pseudoephedrine, which is toxic to pets — confirm the exact formulation with your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any human product. Some liquid or dissolving formulations may contain xylitol, which is also dangerous for pets.

Do I need a prescription for loratadine?

Yes. Loratadine is available only by prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Is loratadine available as a commercial product or a compounded formulation?

Both. Mixlab can dispense the FDA-approved commercial tablet, or compound the active ingredient into an alternative strength or format if your veterinarian determines that better suits your pet's needs. The decision rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

What is loratadine used for in pets?

Loratadine is used to help manage mild allergic reactions in dogs and cats. Your veterinarian determines whether it's an appropriate part of your pet's allergy management plan.

What should I watch for while my pet is on loratadine?

Mild drowsiness or dry mouth are the most commonly reported effects. Contact your veterinarian if you notice increased thirst, reduced tear production, or unusual behavior changes.
