Lidocaine/Prilocaine is a topical anesthetic cream combining two local anesthetics, applied to pet’s skin to numb the area before procedures. It's often used before IV catheter placements or minor skin surgeries to minimize pain from needle sticks or incisions.

How to Apply Topical Cream to Your Pet

Topical creams are smooth, lotion-like medications applied to your pet’s skin to treat infections, wounds, or deliver medicine. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

  1. Prep Yourself: Wash your hands first. Use gloves if advised by your vet.
  2. Prep the Area: Clean the affected area gently with warm water and pat dry. If needed, part or trim fur to reach the skin (only if your vet recommends).
  3. Apply the Cream: Use the prescribed amount (usually pea-sized). Apply directly to the skin.
  4. Spread It Gently: Rub the cream in softly to create a thin, even layer.
  5. Prevent Licking: Distract your pet or use a cone to stop licking until the cream absorbs.
  6. Clean Up: Wash your hands (and discard gloves, if used).
  7. Follow-Up: Reward your pet! Monitor the area and contact your vet if irritation appears.
