Lidocaine is an FDA-approved commercial injection containing lidocaine, dispensed by Mixlab for veterinary use in dogs, cats and horses. Available by prescription.

"The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Lidocaine is a local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic agent that blocks sodium channels in nerve and cardiac tissue. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for local and regional anesthesia and for the treatment of certain ventricular arrhythmias.

In veterinary medicine, lidocaine is used for local and regional anesthesia (epidural, nerve block, infiltration) and, given intravenously, to treat certain ventricular arrhythmias in dogs and cats. Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring."

Cats are more sensitive than dogs to lidocaine's cardiovascular and neurologic effects, and dosing requires particular care in this species. Signs of toxicity can include tremors, seizures, low blood pressure, and abnormal heart rhythm. Use with caution in animals with liver disease, since lidocaine is metabolized by the liver. This drug is subject to detection in equine medication-testing programs; always consult your veterinarian about the appropriate duration of use and whether your horse's competitive status requires a withdrawal period, as specific withdrawal times vary by jurisdiction and governing body.
