A synthetic sugar used as a laxative and to manage hepatic encephalopathy in pets. Given orally (as a syrup), lactulose draws water into the colon to soften stools and relieve constipation, and in cases of liver disease (especially in cats and dogs), it helps trap ammonia in the gut, reducing its absorption and alleviating neurological symptoms associated with high ammonia levels.
