Kristalose is a lactulose-based osmotic laxative used in veterinary medicine to treat constipation and help manage hepatic encephalopathy by reducing ammonia absorption in the gut. It works by drawing water into the colon and promoting softer stools while supporting the elimination of toxins. It is commonly prescribed when gentle, non-stimulant laxation is needed.

The active ingredient in Kristalose is lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide that acts as an osmotic laxative.

Powder medications are meant to be mixed into food or treats, not given on their own (since most pets won’t lick up plain powder). The key is to mix it into something tasty so your pet eats the entire dose.

How to Give It:

  1. Measure the dose using the included scoop or follow the instructions. If you’re unsure how much to give, ask your vet or pharmacist.
  2. Mix it with a small amount of soft food or treat—like wet food, baby food (meat flavor), peanut butter (xylitol-free), yogurt, or cheese. Use just enough to hide the powder so your pet finishes it all in one go.
  3. Stir it well to blend the powder in evenly. Add a splash of water if needed to make it smoother.
  4. Offer it when your pet is a little hungry, and watch to make sure they eat the whole thing.
  5. If your pet refuses, try something else they love next time. For cats, you can also try smearing the paste on their paw to lick off (only if safe and comfortable).
  6. For large animals, mix the powder into a small portion of feed with water or molasses, then follow with the rest of their food once they’ve eaten the medicated part.
  7. Store the powder in a cool, dry place with the lid closed tightly.

Never give powder straight into your pet’s mouth—it can be dangerous if inhaled.

Lactulose, commercially available as Kristalose, is a synthetic disaccharide utilized for localized gastrointestinal and metabolic management. It is a prescription medication available as crystals for oral solution, frequently considered in the context of liver health for patients presented with hepatic encephalopathy or chronic constipation.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

At a pharmacological level, it manages the environment of the colon by acidifying its contents, considered in the context of managing the absorption of ammonia into the bloodstream. Commonly observed effects include localized digestive changes such as loose stools, flatulence or cramping. Because it influences hydration, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of metabolic status. Owners should monitor for significant changes in stool consistency and contact their veterinarian promptly with any concerns.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Kristalose is a prescription medication and requires a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all legal and professional standards.

How is Kristalose different from liquid lactulose?

Veterinarians discuss Kristalose because it is a dry crystal format that can be dissolved into water or mixed with food. This may be considered in the context of managing the dose more conveniently for some owners.

Why is this used for liver disease?

Veterinarians discuss Kristalose because it helps trap ammonia in the gut so it can be expelled. This may be considered in the context of managing neurological signs associated with liver challenges.

Will this medication cause diarrhea?

Loose stools are a commonly observed effect and often a goal of the management approach. Your veterinarian will provide guidance on adjusting the dose to achieve the desired stool consistency.

Is it safe for cats?

Yes, Kristalose is frequently considered for feline patients presented with chronic constipation or liver challenges. Your veterinarian will determine the clinical appropriateness based on your cat's needs.
