Giving your pet an injection might feel intimidating at first, but with practice, it becomes routine. Follow these steps for safe and stress-free injections.

Get Your Supplies Ready

  1. Medication vial or pre-filled syringe

  2. Attach needle to syringe
  3. Pull in air equal to the dose
  4. Insert needle into vial, push air in
  5. Draw out the correct dose
  6. Tap out air bubbles

Pick the Injection Site

  1. Subcutaneous (under the skin): Loose skin between shoulder blades or side
  2. Intramuscular (into muscle): As directed by your vet

Prep the Area

  1. Pinch a fold of skin to form a “tent” (for subcutaneous). Wipe with alcohol if recommended.

Inject the Medication

This compounded formulation combines guaifenesin, a centrally acting muscle relaxant, with dextrose, a carbohydrate source — two different drug classes. In compounding practice, clinicians may consider a combination like this for a multi-targeted approach. Your veterinarian determines whether it is appropriate based on your animal's diagnostic findings.

At a pharmacological level, guaifenesin acts as a centrally acting muscle relaxant by blocking nerve impulse transmission at the internuncial neurons of the spinal cord, brainstem and subcortical areas of the brain. Unlike neuromuscular blocking agents, it does not affect the diaphragm or respiratory muscles at therapeutic concentrations, allowing for muscle relaxation without immediate respiratory paralysis. Dextrose serves as a hypertonic carbohydrate source that provides immediate cellular energy and helps stabilize the osmotic pressure of the solution. Your veterinarian will determine the appropriate administration rate and volume based on the patient's weight, the desired depth of relaxation and the presence of other pre-anesthetic medications.

This description reflects the general pharmacology of the active ingredient's drug class; your veterinarian determines whether this approach is appropriate for your animal.

Commonly observed effects of guaifenesin/dextrose include a temporary increase in heart rate and mild changes in blood pressure. Some animals may exhibit transient muscle tremors during the induction or recovery phases. Because this medication is typically administered via a large-volume intravenous infusion, your veterinarian will monitor the injection site for signs of localized tissue irritation or thrombophlebitis. If you observe significant swelling at the infusion site, persistent lethargy or signs of respiratory distress following a procedure, contact your veterinarian promptly.

This medication is typically used with extra caution in patients with known cardiovascular disease or significant renal impairment, as the large volume of fluid and the metabolic demands of the active ingredients can stress these systems. It is also carefully evaluated in patients with pre-existing metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance or equine metabolic syndrome due to the dextrose component. Before a procedure involving guaifenesin/dextrose, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other prescriptions and supplements your pet is receiving. Your veterinarian is the right person to provide patient monitoring during the recovery window to ensure a safe transition back to a standing, alert state.

Do I need a prescription to get guaifenesin/dextrose for my pet?

Yes. Guaifenesin/dextrose is a prescription medication and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all prescriptions before any medication is prepared or sent to your home or clinic.

Can guaifenesin/dextrose be compounded for my pet?

Yes. While guaifenesin is available in some commercial formats, Mixlab can compound this specific combination into specialized concentrations or volumes if your veterinarian determines a customized preparation is necessary for an individual patient. The decision between a commercial and compounded product rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

Why is guaifenesin used for horses during surgery?

Veterinarians discuss guaifenesin because it provides significant relaxation of the skeletal muscles without paralyzing the muscles responsible for breathing. This makes it a frequent choice for helping horses transition smoothly into a state of general anesthesia while maintaining vital physiological functions.

What is the role of dextrose in this combination?

Veterinarians include dextrose in this formulation to provide a source of energy for the patient during clinical procedures and to help maintain stable blood sugar levels. It also helps adjust the concentration of the solution to ensure it is appropriate for intravenous administration.

Mixlab is a licensed veterinary pharmacy dispensing both compounded and commercial medications, operating under the oversight of licensed pharmacists and in compliance with applicable state and federal pharmacy regulations.
