Glipizide is available as an FDA-approved commercial tablet and as a compounded formulation, prepared by Mixlab for veterinary use in cats. Available by prescription.

The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Glipizide is a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin release from the pancreas. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes.

In veterinary medicine, glipizide is used off-label in some cats with diabetes mellitus who still produce some of their own insulin, generally when insulin injections are not a feasible option. Insulin therapy remains the standard treatment for feline diabetes, and your veterinarian determines whether glipizide is an appropriate alternative. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.

Give with food to reduce the risk of low blood sugar and gastrointestinal upset. Vomiting and decreased appetite are commonly reported; low blood sugar, causing weakness, wobbliness, or collapse, is a serious risk that requires immediate veterinary attention. Regular blood glucose monitoring is important on this medication, and your veterinarian will periodically reassess whether it is still controlling your cat's diabetes effectively.

Do I need a prescription for glipizide?

Yes. Glipizide is available only by prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Is glipizide available as a commercial product or a compounded formulation?

Both. Mixlab can dispense the FDA-approved commercial tablet, or compound the active ingredient into an alternative strength or format if your veterinarian determines that better suits your cat's needs. The decision rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

What is glipizide used for in cats?

Glipizide is used to help manage diabetes mellitus in some cats who still produce some of their own insulin. Your veterinarian determines whether it's an appropriate option for your cat.

Is glipizide as effective as insulin for cats?

Insulin remains the standard and most reliable treatment for feline diabetes. Glipizide is used in select cases at your veterinarian's discretion, most often when insulin injections aren't a feasible option, and its response is monitored closely.
