Enalapril is an ACE inhibitor that is used in combination with the vasodilators Isoxsuprine and Pentoxifylline for cardiovascular and vascular conditions and for navicular disease and laminitis in horses.

How to Give Anhydrous Oral Suspension

Oral Suspension (Anhydrous) is a liquid medication that does not contain water in its base. This might be an oil-based or other special base to help stabilize the medicine. It will look like a regular liquid medication, but often needs a good shake because the drug can settle. Here's how to give it:

  1. Shake well each time to mix the medication (5-10 seconds).
  2. Measure the dose using the syringe/dropper provided or one recommended by your vet. Insert the top of the oral syringe into the bottle adapter. Turn the bottle upside down and pull the plunger until the medicine reaches the volume required
  3. Hold your pet steady: a towel or helper can assist with squirmy pets.
  4. Administer the dose slowly into the side of the mouth. Allow small pauses if needed for swallowing.
  5. Raise the head slightly to help the medication go down and clean any spills with a little water or tissue.
  6. Praise your pet and offer a treat or water (unless advised against feeding right after).
  7. Clean the syringe with water immediately after use. Store the bottle as directed, out of sunlight.
  8. Consistency is key: Shake each time, measure accurately, and contact your vet if any issues arise.

This compounded formulation combines active ingredients from different drug classes: enalapril, an ACE inhibitor; isoxsuprine, a vasodilator; and pentoxifylline, a hemorheologic agent. In compounding practice, clinicians may consider a multi-ingredient preparation like this to address more than one aspect of a patient's physiology at once. Your veterinarian determines whether it is appropriate based on your animal's diagnostic findings.

This description reflects the general pharmacology of the active ingredient's drug class; your veterinarian determines whether this approach is appropriate for your animal.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.

Commonly observed effects include temporary behavioral shifts such as lethargy or localized changes in blood pressure. Because these active ingredients influence the cardiovascular system, your veterinarian will monitor for observational signs of weakness or significant shifts in heart rate. It is typically used with caution in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or known cardiovascular compromise. Owners should monitor their pet for any unusual signs and contact their veterinarian promptly with any concerns regarding the patient's response.

Do I need a prescription for this combination?

Yes. This triple-agent preparation is a prescription medication and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian.

Can this combination be compounded for my pet?

Yes. Mixlab specializes in compounding this combination of enalapril, isoxsuprine and pentoxifylline into customized oral formats, such as flavored powders or liquids, to suit the needs of horses.

Why are three vasodilators used together?

Veterinarians discuss this combination for complex circulatory issues where managing blood flow from multiple pharmacological angles is a clinical objective. This provides a method for addressing vascular health in the extremities.

Is this medication used for dogs?

While these ingredients are used in various species, this specific combination is most frequently discussed in the context of equine podiatry and vascular health. Your veterinarian will determine if it is appropriate for your pet.

What monitoring is required for my horse?

Your veterinarian may recommend periodic monitoring of blood pressure and renal values during the course of management. They will provide a specific schedule to ensure the management approach remains suitable.
