Diltiazem HCl is available as an FDA-approved commercial tablet and as a compounded formulation, prepared by Mixlab for veterinary use in cats and dogs. Available by prescription.

"The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels and slows certain electrical activity in the heart. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for hypertension and certain heart rhythm conditions.

In veterinary medicine, diltiazem is used off-label in cats, most often to help manage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and in dogs for certain arrhythmias or hypertension. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness."

Give consistently, at the same times each day, since missed or irregular dosing can affect heart rhythm control. Commonly reported effects include decreased appetite, lethargy, and low blood pressure; slow heart rate has also been reported. Your veterinarian will likely recommend periodic monitoring, which may include blood pressure checks or echocardiograms. Contact your veterinarian if your pet seems unusually weak, collapses, or stops eating.

Do I need a prescription for diltiazem?

Yes. Diltiazem is available only by prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Is diltiazem available as a commercial product or a compounded formulation?

Both. Mixlab can dispense the FDA-approved commercial tablet, or compound the active ingredient into an alternative strength or format if your veterinarian determines that better suits your pet's needs. The decision rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

What is diltiazem used for in pets?

Diltiazem is used to help manage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in cats, and certain arrhythmias or hypertension in dogs. Your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your pet.

What should I watch for while my pet is on diltiazem?

Contact your veterinarian if your pet seems unusually weak, collapses, or stops eating.
