Giving your pet an injection might feel intimidating at first, but with practice, it becomes routine. Follow these steps for safe and stress-free injections.

Get Your Supplies Ready

  1. Medication vial or pre-filled syringe
  2. Alcohol swabs
  3. Sterile syringe & needle (if not pre-filled)
  4. Sharps container for safe needle disposal

Drawing Up the Dose (if needed)

  1. Clean the vial top with an alcohol swab
  2. Attach needle to syringe
  3. Pull in air equal to the dose
  4. Insert needle into vial, push air in
  5. Draw out the correct dose
  6. Tap out air bubbles

Pick the Injection Site

  1. Subcutaneous (under the skin): Loose skin between shoulder blades or side
  2. Intramuscular (into muscle): As directed by your vet

Prep the Area

  1. Pinch a fold of skin to form a “tent” (for subcutaneous). Wipe with alcohol if recommended.

Inject the Medication

Safety Tips

  1. Never reuse needles
  2. Always dispose of used needles properly
  3. Ask your vet for help if unsure

This compounded formulation combines detomidine, an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, with xylazine, an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist — two different drug classes. In compounding practice, clinicians may consider a combination like this for a multi-targeted approach. Your veterinarian determines whether it is appropriate based on your animal's diagnostic findings.

At a pharmacological level, both detomidine and xylazine act as agonists at central and peripheral alpha-2 adrenergic receptors. When these receptors are stimulated, they facilitate a reduction in the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine, within the central nervous system. This mechanism leads to a dose-dependent state of sedation, significant muscle relaxation and a reduction in the perception of pain. While they belong to the same medication class, detomidine is generally more potent and has a longer duration of action. The combination acts to leverage these differences to provide a smooth onset and a reliable recovery profile. Your veterinarian will determine the appropriate ratio and administration protocol based on your horse's weight, temperament and the specific requirements of the clinical procedure.

This description reflects the general pharmacology of the active ingredient's drug class; your veterinarian determines whether this approach is appropriate for your animal.

Commonly observed effects following the administration of detomidine/xylazine include visible sedation, a lowered head carriage and a temporary decrease in heart rate (bradycardia). Some horses may also experience transient changes in blood pressure, localized sweating, increased urination or a decrease in gastrointestinal motility. Owners should be aware that horses may appear less coordinated (ataxic) during the onset of sedation, which necessitates a safe environment with minimal external stimuli. This combination also significantly influences thermoregulation, so monitoring body temperature is a common part of the clinical process.

This medication is typically used with extra caution or avoided in horses with pre-existing cardiovascular disease, respiratory compromise or significant liver or kidney impairment. It is also carefully evaluated in horses experiencing shock or severe dehydration. Before administration, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other supplements and prescriptions your horse is receiving, as alpha-2 agonists can interact with other central nervous system depressants or certain antibiotics. Your veterinarian will monitor your horse's response throughout the sedative period to ensure the protocol remains appropriate for their individual health status. Contact your veterinarian promptly if you observe any unexpected behavioral changes or persistent physical symptoms as the sedation wears off.

Do I need a prescription to get detomidine/xylazine for my pet?

Yes. Detomidine hydrochloride/xylazine hydrochloride is a prescription medication and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy like Mixlab upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all prescriptions before any medication is prepared or dispensed.

Can detomidine/xylazine be compounded for my pet?

Yes. While both medications exist in commercial formats, Mixlab can compound this specific combination into specialized strengths or alternative delivery forms if your veterinarian determines a customized preparation is necessary for your horse's individual needs. The decision between a commercial and compounded product rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

Why are detomidine and xylazine used together in horses?

Veterinarians discuss the combination of these two alpha-2 agonists because they act synergistically to provide a deeper, more reliable state of sedation and analgesia than either medication used alone. This is often considered helpful for procedures that require the horse to remain standing but very still and comfortable.

How long does the sedation from detomidine/xylazine last?

The duration of sedation varies based on the specific doses used and the individual horse's metabolism, but clinical effects typically last between 30 and 90 minutes. Your veterinarian will provide guidance on the expected recovery timeline and will monitor your horse until they have returned to a normal physiological state.
