Cough Tabs is an FDA-approved preparation containing Cough Tabs, for veterinary use. Available by prescription.

Cough Tabs® is a commercial brand of a combination antitussive and expectorant utilized in veterinary medicine for the management of cough. It is a prescription medication available for use in dogs and cats, frequently considered by veterinarians for patients presented with non-productive coughs associated with kennel cough or environmental irritation. At a pharmacological level, Cough Tabs® provides a combination of guaifenesin and dextromethorphan hydrobromide. Dextromethorphan acts as a centrally acting antitussive by managing the cough reflex in the brain, while guaifenesin acts as an expectorant by increasing the volume and addressing the viscosity of respiratory secretions. This mechanism provides a dual-layered method for managing the frequency of coughing while facilitating the clearance of mucus from the airways. Your veterinarian will determine the clinical appropriateness of Cough Tabs® based on your pet’s respiratory examination and diagnostic findings.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring.

Commonly observed effects following the administration of Cough Tabs® include sedation, localized digestive changes such as nausea or vomiting or temporary coordination shifts. Some animals may exhibit behavioral shifts including lethargy or a decrease in appetite. Owners should monitor their pet for any unusual changes in breathing patterns or persistent digestive distress and contact their veterinarian promptly with any concerns regarding their pet’s response to the medication. This medication is typically used with extra caution or avoided in patients with known severe respiratory compromise, chronic productive coughs or known hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients. It is also carefully evaluated in pets receiving other central nervous system depressants or specific medications for behavior. Before starting a protocol, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other medications your pet is receiving. Your veterinarian is the right person to provide guidance on the necessary duration of use to ensure the management approach remains suitable for your pet's respiratory recovery.

Do I need a prescription to get Cough Tabs for my pet?

Yes. Cough Tabs is a prescription medication and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all authorizations before any medication is prepared or shipped to your home.

Can Cough Tabs be compounded for my pet?

Cough Tabs is a commercial tablet formulation. If your veterinarian determines that a customized strength or a different flavored dosage form—such as a flavored oral liquid—is better suited for your pet, Mixlab can compound the active ingredients into a customized formulation. The decision rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

How does Cough Tabs help my pet's cough?

Veterinarians discuss Cough Tabs because it manages the cough reflex in the brain while also helping to thin out mucus in the airways. This provides a method for addressing the urge to cough and making it easier for your pet to breathe comfortably.

Can I use human cough medicine for my pet?

You should only use medications specifically authorized by your veterinarian. Human formulations often contain ingredients like xylitol or decongestants that can be toxic to pets. Always consult your veterinarian before administering any cough management.

Mixlab is a licensed veterinary pharmacy dispensing both compounded and commercial medications, operating under the oversight of licensed pharmacists and in compliance with applicable state and federal pharmacy regulations. Compounded medications are prepared in compliance with USP standards and under PCAB-accredited practices. All medications dispensed by Mixlab require a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian.
