Cosyntropin is a synthetic derivative of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) utilized in veterinary medicine primarily as a diagnostic tool. It is a prescription medication available for use in dogs and cats, specifically considered by veterinarians for the performance of ACTH stimulation tests. At a pharmacological level, cosyntropin acts by stimulating the adrenal cortex to produce and secrete cortisol and other adrenal steroids. This action mimics the natural physiological response to endogenous ACTH. By measuring the pet's cortisol levels before and after administration, your veterinarian can manage the diagnostic process for conditions such as hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease) or hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease). Cosyntropin is characterized by its ability to provide a predictable and standardized adrenal response, providing a method for accurate diagnostic evaluation. Your veterinarian will determine the clinical necessity of cosyntropin based on your pet’s clinical signs and baseline blood work.

Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.

Commonly observed effects following the administration of cosyntropin are rare, as it is typically used as a single dose for diagnostic purposes. Some pets may exhibit localized changes at the injection site or temporary behavioral shifts such as restlessness. While hypersensitivity reactions are uncommon, they have been observed in some individuals. Owners should monitor their pet for any unusual swelling, hives or energy shifts shortly after the diagnostic procedure and contact their veterinarian promptly with any concerns. This medication is typically used in a controlled clinical environment under professional supervision. It is carefully evaluated in pets with a history of hypersensitivity to ACTH or other synthetic proteins. Because cosyntropin influences hormone levels, your veterinarian is the right person to provide guidance on the timing of the test and how the results will inform your pet’s overall management plan.

Do I need a prescription to get cosyntropin for my pet?

Yes. Cosyntropin is a prescription diagnostic agent. Because it is used for specific medical testing, it is typically administered by your veterinarian in a clinical setting rather than dispensed for home use.

Can cosyntropin be compounded for my pet?

Yes. While cosyntropin is available in commercial injectable formats, Mixlab can compound the active ingredient into customized concentrations or volumes when a veterinarian determines that a specific preparation is required for a diagnostic protocol. The decision rests with your veterinarian.

What is an ACTH stimulation test?

An ACTH stimulation test is a method veterinarians use to see how well your pet's adrenal glands are working. Cosyntropin is used to trigger the adrenal glands, allowing the veterinarian to measure their response and manage the diagnostic process for hormone imbalances.

Are there risks with cosyntropin testing?

While cosyntropin is generally well-tolerated for a single diagnostic dose, your veterinarian will monitor your pet for any signs of an allergic reaction. Your veterinarian is the best source of information regarding the safety and necessity of this test for your pet.
