Clarithromycin is available as an FDA-approved commercial tablet and as a compounded formulation, prepared by Mixlab for veterinary use in dogs, cats and horses. Available by prescription.

"The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for a range of bacterial infections, including respiratory and skin infections.

In veterinary medicine, clarithromycin is used off-label in dogs and cats for certain bacterial infections, and in foals for Rhodococcus equi pneumonia, often in combination with other antimicrobials. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring. Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness."

Give the full course as prescribed. Commonly reported effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite; in foals, diarrhea can be more pronounced and heat sensitivity has been reported in warm weather, so keep treated foals out of direct heat and monitor closely. Tell your veterinarian about all other medications your animal is taking, since clarithromycin has significant interactions with several other drugs.

Do I need a prescription for clarithromycin?

Yes. Clarithromycin is available only by prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Is clarithromycin available as a commercial product or a compounded formulation?

Both. Mixlab can dispense the FDA-approved commercial tablet, or compound the active ingredient into an alternative strength or format if your veterinarian determines that better suits your animal's needs. The decision rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

What is clarithromycin used for in animals?

Clarithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections in dogs and cats, and Rhodococcus equi pneumonia in foals. Your veterinarian determines whether it's appropriate based on diagnostic testing.

What should I watch for while my animal is on clarithromycin?

Contact your veterinarian if you notice persistent vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. In foals, watch for signs of heat stress and keep them out of direct sun.
