It is given orally to cats (and sometimes dogs) under veterinary supervision to help manage chronic constipation or megacolon by enhancing movement in the GI tract.
How to Give Lactulose Oral Suspension
Lactulose is a thick, sweet syrup used to treat constipation and can help mask medication taste. Here’s how to give it:
- Shake well before each dose – it’s thick and can settle.
- Measure the dose slowly using an oral syringe. You can draw from the bottle or a small cup.
- Give by mouth: Gently insert the syringe into your pet’s cheek and slowly push the plunger. Most pets like the sweet taste.
- Let them swallow gradually if the dose is large – go in small amounts if needed.
- Offer water after to rinse the mouth and help with any sticky residue.
- Praise your pet – they may enjoy this one!
- Clean the syringe with warm soapy water right away to prevent stickiness.
- Store tightly closed at room temp unless told otherwise. If it crystallizes, contact your vet.
