Cinacalcet is an FDA-approved commercial product, dispensed by Mixlab for veterinary use in cats. Available by prescription.

The uses and pharmacology described below reflect the FDA-approved labeling for this active ingredient; your veterinarian determines whether and how they apply to your animal's treatment plan.

Cinacalcet is a calcimimetic that increases the sensitivity of calcium-sensing receptors, reducing parathyroid hormone release. On the FDA-approved human label, it is indicated for secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients on dialysis and for hypercalcemia associated with parathyroid cancer.

In veterinary medicine, cinacalcet is used off-label in cats, an emerging option for managing elevated blood calcium, including cases associated with chronic kidney disease. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring.

Your veterinarian will likely recommend periodic bloodwork to monitor calcium and parathyroid hormone levels and adjust dosing accordingly. Commonly reported effects include decreased appetite and vomiting. Use with caution in cats with significant kidney or liver impairment, and tell your veterinarian about all other medications your cat is taking.
