Cefpodoxime proxetil is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of skin infections, including wounds and abscesses, caused by susceptible bacteria in dogs. Prescription only. Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis, prescribing, or monitoring.

Give the full course as prescribed, even if your dog appears to improve early, to help prevent resistant infections. Commonly reported effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. Use with caution in dogs with a known allergy to cephalosporin or penicillin-class antibiotics. Contact your veterinarian if you notice hives, facial swelling, severe vomiting, or diarrhea.
