How to Give Oral Solution

Oral solutions are liquid medications that you give by mouth. In a solution, the medication is completely dissolved in the liquid, so it usually looks clear or evenly colored. Here's how to give it:

  1. Shake well each time to mix the medication (5-10 seconds).
  2. Measure the dose using the syringe/dropper provided or one recommended by your vet. Insert the top of the oral syringe into the bottle adapter. Turn the bottle upside down and pull the plunger until the medicine reaches the volume required
  3. Hold your pet steady: a towel or helper can assist with squirmy pets.
  4. Administer the dose slowly into the side of the mouth. Allow small pauses if needed for swallowing.
  5. Raise the head slightly to help the medication go down and clean any spills with a little water or tissue.
  6. Praise your pet and offer a treat or water (unless advised against feeding right after).
  7. Clean the syringe with water immediately after use. Store the bottle as directed, out of sunlight.
  8. Consistency is key: Shake each time, measure accurately, and contact your vet if any issues arise.

Veterinarians most commonly consider Atopica® when a patient is presented with chronic dermatological health challenges that have not been adequately managed by other interventions. It is frequently a point of discussion for pets experiencing intense pruritus (itching) and localized skin inflammation linked to environmental allergens. By modulating the activity of specific immune cells, your veterinarian can manage the physiological overreaction of the immune system to common environmental triggers.

At a pharmacological level, cyclosporine acts by selectively inhibiting the enzyme calcineurin. This inhibition may help address the transcription of several cytokines, most notably interleukin-2 (IL-2), which is essential for the activation and proliferation of T-lymphocytes. Because T-cells are the primary drivers of the allergic inflammatory cascade, addressing their activity leads to a decrease in the biochemical signals that produce skin redness and itching. Atopica® possesses a targeted mechanism that does not generally result in the broad systemic suppression associated with traditional steroid therapy. Your veterinarian will determine the clinical appropriateness of this medication based on your pet’s diagnostic history and overall metabolic health.

The actions described here reflect the product's FDA-approved labeling; your veterinarian determines the appropriate use for your animal.

Commonly observed effects following the administration of Atopica® include gastrointestinal changes such as vomiting, loose stools or a decrease in appetite. These shifts are often transient and may be managed by following specific administration timing provided by your veterinarian. Some owners may note localized changes in coat quality or gingival overgrowth (enlargement of the gums) during long-term use. Because this medication influences immune signaling, your veterinarian will monitor for signs of secondary infections and may perform periodic blood work to ensure the management approach remains suitable for your pet's health status. Owners should watch for signs of persistent lethargy or unusual skin lesions and contact their veterinarian promptly if these occur.

This medication is typically used with extra caution or avoided in patients with a history of malignant neoplasia (cancer) or those with known severe renal impairment. It is also carefully evaluated in pets with a history of diabetes mellitus, as cyclosporine can influence insulin levels in some individuals. Before starting a protocol, ensure your veterinarian has a complete history of all other medications your pet is receiving, as significant interactions can occur with certain antifungal medications or other immunosuppressants. Your veterinarian is the right person to provide guidance on the necessary duration of use and the most commonly considered monitoring schedule for your pet's individual needs.

Do I need a prescription to get Atopica® for my pet?

Yes. Atopica® is a prescription immunosuppressant medication and can only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy upon receipt of a valid authorization from a licensed veterinarian. Mixlab verifies all authorizations before any medication is prepared or shipped to your home.

Can Atopica® be compounded for my pet?

Yes. While Atopica® is available as a commercial capsule and oral solution, Mixlab can compound the active ingredient, cyclosporine, into specialized strengths or alternative flavored dosage forms if your veterinarian determines a customized preparation better suits your pet's needs. The decision between a commercial and compounded product rests with the prescribing veterinarian.

Is Atopica® the same thing as a steroid?

Atopica® is not a corticosteroid; it belongs to a class of medications called calcineurin inhibitors. Veterinarians often discuss this distinction because Atopica® targets the immune system more selectively than steroids, which can help manage long-term skin health with a different physiological profile.

Should I give Atopica® with food?

Veterinarians generally recommend administering Atopica® at least one hour before or two hours after a meal to ensure the best possible absorption. However, if your pet experiences stomach upset, your veterinarian may suggest a different administration schedule to support better gastrointestinal tolerance.

Mixlab is a licensed veterinary pharmacy dispensing both compounded and commercial medications, operating under the oversight of licensed pharmacists and in compliance with applicable state and federal pharmacy regulations. Compounded medications are prepared in compliance with USP standards and under PCAB-accredited practices. All medications dispensed by Mixlab require a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian.
